Tag-Team Teaching

May 3, 2021

“Co-teaching does not exist solely to bring two teachers together. Co-teaching exists to serve students.”

From How to Co-teach, Potts & Howard

Have you ever tried it? Two knowledgeable, enthusiastic teachers, co-communicating a subject about which they are passionate.  It’s. Just. So. Fun!  In my experience, this kind of teaching is a platform which brings individual strengths to the forefront. When both teachers are respectful and patient enough to allow the other to complete their thought, the possibilities for creativity and quality content are endless! The real winner? The students! They get a double dose of mature zeal, master craftsmanship, outstanding information, and the rare joy of observing congruous relationships all in one presentation.

More than likely, you know someone who is as keen about teaching your favorite subject as you. Ask them out for dinner. Brainstorm possibilities for topics about which you are mutually informed. Once a decision is made, create an outline together. Enjoy one or two more conversations, casually following the outline. Then open the floodgates on your students. You’ll enjoy the process so much that it will become a regular part of your lesson planning!

With whom would you like to try this? If you’ve already experienced the joys of co-teaching, is there a new teacher on your team who has not? Give them a special gift by inviting them into the process!

About Keep Calm and Shoot Straight

I am a teacher. You, too? I hope you love the profession as much as I do! I was 16 when I got my first teaching gigs – I had 20 private piano students and a Sunday School class of 4 and 5-year olds! At that point in my “career,” my definition of teacher was very limited. But now – after 45+ years of experience – I have come to realize that teacher can mean many different things. I’d like to share some of those insights with you! My posts will range from quotes to prayers, from cartoons to words of wisdom. Much of my teaching experience has been international, so you'll get to watch some video stories from around the globe. Jesus is the best Teacher I know, so I will be including Him in this blog, as well. I hope my thoughts and my story will encourage, provoke, and inspire you to become the teacher you’ve been created to be!
