Keep Calm and Shoot Straight
A Blog for Teachers
by Mary Jean Powers
Be Careful With Students
“Be kind. For everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”
Today I looked up synonyms for the word careful. Are you ready for this?
Alert, aware, attentive, watchful, cautious, unhurried, mindful, prudent.
There are more, but you get the idea.
Reread the title of this blog eight times, replacing the word careful with each of the synonyms.
Hmmm. I’m not always the most careful of teachers.
How about you?
Sometimes I forget that my classroom is not all about me ~ hahaha!
Although it would be nice to be appreciatively acknowledged by sensitive and concerned students every day, that’s probably not going to be the norm.
There is no escaping it: my role as teacher is to be careful with my students.
This is tricky because I can’t give away what I don’t have.
In this case, if I’m not careful with myself, I’m probably not going to be careful with my students.
“Love your neighbor as you love yourself.”
Which brings us to this short video story.
It’s a good reminder that we can make the choice to be careful with our students every day.
It’s a good reminder that we are as human as they.
It’s a good reminder that gentleness comes from forgiveness.
And, that the human Teacher Jesus, made daily choices to be careful with His students.
He’s making the same choice today – with you and with me, His students.
About Keep Calm and Shoot Straight
I am a teacher. You, too? I hope you love the profession as much as I do! I was 16 when I got my first teaching gigs – I had 20 private piano students and a Sunday School class of 4 and 5-year olds! At that point in my “career,” my definition of teacher was very limited. But now – after 45+ years of experience – I have come to realize that teacher can mean many different things. I’d like to share some of those insights with you! My posts will range from quotes to prayers, from cartoons to words of wisdom. Much of my teaching experience has been international, so you'll get to watch some video stories from around the globe. Jesus is the best Teacher I know, so I will be including Him in this blog, as well. I hope my thoughts and my story will encourage, provoke, and inspire you to become the teacher you’ve been created to be!
